CO2 absorbent is a solid material that removes carbon dioxide (CO2) from a rebreathing circuit during the veterinary anesthesia process. The absorbent allows fresh gas flow while filtering out exhaled CO2.

The material absorbs CO2 through a gas-solid absorption process, preventing the gas from building up in the animal’s bloodstream.

CO2 absorbents were invented in the mid-20th century with the emergence of rebreathing circuits. These specialized circuits required a solution to remove CO2, leading to the invention of CO2 absorbents.

There are two main types of CO2 absorbents:

Soda-lime
Blended amines
