The PDM suture may first elicit a minimal acute inflammatory reaction in tissues before the gradual encapsulation of the suture. Absorption of the suture occurs through hydrolysis and begins as a gradual loss of tensile strength. Absorption is kept minimal until about 9 weeks and is essentially complete after a timeframe of 6 to 8 months.
