Topic: The Basics of Small Intestinal Surgery: Enterotomy, Resection and Anastomosis

Webinar Description:
This webinar will focus on intra-operative decision making and specific surgical techniques for enterotomy and resection and anastomosis of the small intestine in dogs and cats. Procedures that minimize the risk of dehiscence and other complications will be emphasized. Discussion will also include how much bowel can be resected, reinforcement of the repair site, antibiotic protocol, and special considerations for different conditions such as intestinal biopsies, linear foreign bodies, intussusception, and intestinal neoplasia.

  • Risk factors for dehiscence after small intestinal surgery
  • Assessing tissue viability and deciding between enterotomy and resection and anastomosis

  • Choosing the best site for intestinal incision or resection
