Service Description

In concentrated form glutaraldehyde is an effective disinfectant ideal for sterilizing temperature-sensitive instruments. When diluted it is employed to disinfect surfaces, such as floors and countertops.  Human exposure to vapors of glutaraldehyde is well known to cause throat and lung irritation, asthma, and severe eye irritation.  Please check the formula of your disinfectants to see if glutaraldehyde is included – this is not always made clear, and manufacturers often claim that their formula is non-irritating (not possible).  We can read SDS for you to help you make this determination – send it to: [email protected]

NIOSH recommends that short-term exposures (15 minutes) to vapors of glutaraldehyde be limited to 0.2 PPM, which covers its use in sterilization of endoscopes and other delicate instruments.  As a surface cleaner, an 8 h exposure limit is more appropriate since glutaraldehyde doesn’t evaporate immediately after application (it boils at 369oF).  Many European countries limit 8 h exposures to 0.05 PPM, so we recommend that this exposure limit be used when glutaraldehyde is used as a surface cleaner (see the IFA GESTIS website for more info).

For a single all-inclusive price, we provide a sampling dosimeter that measures glutaraldehyde, return shipping to the lab for analysis and a detailed analysis report.  No upcharges or hidden fee's.  Our dosimeter service will empower you with the knowledge that you need to keep your coworkers/employees safe.

Wear this badge-style dosemeter on the shirt collar when performing a cleaning procedure using glutaraldehyde concentrate, or working in a room where glutaraldehyde in more dilute form has been used as a surface cleaner. Please note the time the dosemeter was exposed (15 minutes to 8 h) and return the sampler to the laboratory for analysis.  We provide a written report within 3 working days of receipt.
